FAQ

Who is the typical user of waste oil heaters or boilers?
Any firm producing an acceptable amount of waste oil and having a need for facility heating or process hot water is a great candidate for Reznor Waste Oil Heaters or Boilers. Among these are automobile, truck and heavy equipment dealers and/or service facilities, municipal and other fleet maintenance facilities, construction, mining larger agricultural businesses, fast lube oil changes, etc.

What waste oil is acceptable to burn?
Reznor Waste Oil Heaters and Boilers are designed for combustion of typical Crankcase Oils, Transmission Fluids, Hydraulic Fluids and # 2 Heating Oil, in any combination up to SAE-50 wt. Typical waste oils contain approximately 140,000 BTUs per gallon. No hazardous materials should be burned in the heater. Any mixture of these may be included in the same fuel tank. If you have questions regarding the suitability of a fuel, the factory should be consulted.

How much oil will a heater or boiler burn?
This depends on the BTU input of the unit. Based on size, the unit's will vary in fuel usage from 1.0 to just over 3.5 gallons per hour of actual burner operation. Consumption will be reduced at higher altitudes. Obviously, total consumption will depend on hours of unit operation, based on outside ambient temperature, thermostat temperature setting and facility insulation factors.

How long will it take me to get a payback on my purchase?
Though a one-year payback is possible, depending on unit cost and the total amount of oil recycled, customers usually experience a payback in no more than two years. Those in colder environments will normally see a quicker payback. Keep in mind that a waste oil-fired heater is the only one that will give you a payback ... period! No matter how efficient a heater fired on other fuels may be, the fuel still has to be paid for. That's what free heat from waste oil is all about!

Do I have enough waste oil to justify a purchase?
Typically, a firm should be generating at least 500 - 700 gallons of waste oil annually. The more you generate and recycle, the more you save, and the better you can justify the investment.

What if I should run out of waste oil?
In most areas, waste oil haulers can provide processed waste oil. This is formerly waste or used oil that has been cleaned and meets lubricant specifications. It is legal to purchase, very affordable and is an excellent fuel for your heater. Of course, you will always have the option of using #2 Fuel Oil (diesel).

Will I have to make adjustments to the burner for different oils?
Not with a Reznor! Reznor Waste Oil Heaters and Boilers are designed to combust any mixture of approved fuels with NO ADJUSTMENTS being required by your shop personnel.

What about emissions?
Reznor Waste Oil Heaters are designed for combustion of heavier used oils, satisfying the guidelines established by the EPA for recycling used oils onsite. Utilizing advances in engineering and technology, Reznor units can burn as clean as typical #2 fuel oil-fired systems.

Will a lot of maintenance be required on the unit?
Periodically, ash residue from the combustion process will need to be cleaned from the combustion chamber and heat exchanger areas of the unit. Reznor provides multiple accesses for this purpose. The in-line oil filter should be cleaned or replaced at the same time. At the end of the heating season, the unit should be powered off and properly serviced, including cleaning of the combustion chamber and heat exchanger, and removal and cleaning of the oil preheater. The patented oil preheater is located outside the burner assembly for quick, easy access. The nozzle and electrodes should be checked for cleaning or replacement. Though unit cleaning is necessary, it is not difficult and can be easily handled by shop personnel. Many owners prefer having Reznor distributors do in-season cleanings for you. It is recommended that the Reznor distributor always do your end-of-season annual service on the unit, getting it ready for immediate and trouble-free operation when cold weather returns.

How do I know which unit is right for my shop?
Units vary in design and one may be preferable over others for your shop. Some are best for side, end or corner, or center of shop locations. Others are preferred for between-bay installation. Some are standard unit heaters and others are ductable, allowing you to put the heat wherever you desire. Some are determined simply by the BTU requirements. It's best to get consult with the Reznor distributor as to proper unit selection and location.

Are there different installation options?
Units may be suspended from the ceiling, supported on stands or wall bracket systems, or installed as part of a Waste Oil Recycling Center. The Recycling Center is comprised of the waste oil heater, and a heavy-duty heater stand, attached to a convenient Workbench Fuel Tank. The Recycling Center allows your unit to be approximately 8' off the floor, brings the heat closer to your shop working areas and provides easy access to the heater for cleaning. Though the Recycling Center is not appropriate for all heater models, it is a preferred installation when possible.

Who will install my heater?
As these units are designed for commercial/industrial applications, various regulations may have to be met outside of the Federal EPA requirements. It is critical that the entire installation be per prevailing codes. As these vary by locale, you should consult with the Reznor distributor as to the requirements in your area. If specific licenses are required, the unit must be installed by such licensed personnel. Hydronic specialists are required for proper waste oil boiler application, sizing and installation. All installations must be done by qualified, trained technicians. The entire installation must comply with the Owner/Installation Manual, including equipment, stack and clearances, appropriate utilities and utility piping, and meet all codes.

Who will service my heater if I have problem, or need replacement parts?
You local distributor is trained and experienced in diagnosing and servicing Reznor waste oil heating products. Most operational issues are a result of insufficient cleaning of the unit, or inappropriate substances in the fuel tank. You distributor can assist you with any service needs and stocks the necessary replacement parts you may require.

Do I have warranty protection?
Reznor provides a 10-Yr. LIMITED WARRANTY. Yr. 1 is 100% for the entire unit. The Combustion Chamber / Heat Exchanger are warranted at 100% for 5 Yrs., and prorated for years 6-10. Reznor stands behind our product.
